Ready? Let's go!

Stress at School: Why Stress About a Test?

There are many reasons why you may start stressing about a test.

Test = Studying!

That's what we all hate. To study. That's one of the reasons school's so stressful. The idea of opening your books and reading the information with the pressure to not make a mistake?

Yep, that's definitely stressful. So, why else does a test strike fear and worry into you?

Test = Pressure

The pressure to succeed. The pressure to be perfect. The pressure to not make a mistake. That's what tests are about.

After all, a test is supposed to "test" your knowledge. So that's a test is asking. "How much do you know?"

How can that be stressful?

Tests are measured. The higher the score, the less you'll be punished. So everyone's trying to score high. So, the competition is another pressure when writing a test.

And what do I mean by, "the less you'll be punished"? It's all about not making mistakes. Tests show how many mistakes you've made.

And for some reason, mistakes are looked upon as a bad thing. So, you feel if you make a mistake, you'll seem "stupid" or "not smart enough".

That's what I mean by "punishment". Well of course, your parents may also "punish" you for making a mistake but that's another story for another time!

Test = Perfectionism = Stress!

If you read about perfectionism , you'll know that trying to be perfect causes stress. So how does this relate to a test?

In test, you're pressured to get perfect. So you go out of your comfort to study, study, study. Then you write the test, thinking you'll get everything right.

But then you get it back, and you've made a few mistakes. What happens? Oh, the stress just mounts up. All this time, you were trying to be perfect, so you treat a simple mistake as a "huge failure".

Bottom-line?

Trying to be perfect causes stress.

Tests are Worth a Lot

Whenever you have a test, it's usually worth more than just "regular work". So, how you write the test could drastically change your grade.

So, you get stressed out. Stress at school is all about grades and tests and getting the highest mark. Don't fall into that trap.

Stress at School: My Tip

I'm about to share a tip with you on how to make tests less stressful.

What's the typical advice for a test? "Study everyday. Don't cram everything in the night before the test".

That's good advice. But it's not great advice. Why?

You still have to study! Studying is the stressful part. So by "studying everyday", you're not solving the problem.

Here's my tip...

When you get back from school, just think about what you learned that day. Everything you can think of.

It'll take you less than 2 minutes, but you'll still be able to remember a lot!

Take-home Lesson?

You now know why tests can be so stressful. You also know how to deal with it! Great!

When you go to school tomorrow, share some of these tips with your friends. You'll them a big favor, and they'll be less stressful too!
