Stress Reduction in the Workplace: Reward Yourself!

Want stress reduction in the workplace? Hey, we all need stress relief at work. You'll learn why rewarding yourself will help you find that workplace stress relief you've always been looking for. Learn this effective tip to use at work!

So, are you ready to start exploring today's technique? Of course you are; let's go!

Stress Reduction in the Workplace: You Like Rewards, Right?

Here's the thing. We all like to be rewarded. Why? It gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment. Also, it encourages you to keep doing what you're doing.

Rewards are kind of like small tokens of appreciation saying, "That was great! Now keep going!". In a nutshell, rewards are good for you. But there's a problem. Yep.

What's the problem?

We don't want to reward ourselves. Why? You feel guilty, or you may think, "I'm spoiling myself!". But that's not true. Well, it's true only when you reward yourself for no reason.

How does rewarding ourselves make us happy, proud, and less stressed?

Well, step right in...

Stress Reduction in the Workplace: You Need a Reward

Okay. So you're job is filled with stress, and your boss is loading you with work. Here's the thing. You come to work, finish humongous amounts of work, and go home stressed.

Then, you wake up the next day, about to face the same boatload of stressful work once again. See the pattern? What's really going on here? All you're doing is working and stressing out about it.

Rewards will stop that stress.

How? Let's say you chose to go out to your favorite restaurant, as a reward for finishing both your own and absent colleague's work. At the restaurant, you feel good, don't you?

Yes. "I earned this", you think. And that's not all.

Stress Reduction in the Workplace: A Reward Changes Your Mindset About Work

A reward also takes your mind of the stressful part of the work. It makes you think of the work as something you've accomplished, not something you had to do.

Another benefit?

A reward reminds you of the hard work you've done. It makes you feel proud and happy that you've done something worthwhile!

You see, when you do hard work, but don't get noticed for it, you'll soon forget about it. So, by rewarding yourself, you feel happy and not stressed.

"I had to do a lot of work? So, who cares?" Once we think about work at our stressful job, we stress out even more.

But what if the thought of the same work is now "backed up" by your reward? You feel like doing it again!

As you can see, it's a great thing to reward yourself. But don't overdo it. How? Here's how I do it...

Stress Reduction in the Workplace: Here's My Way

I do a lot of paperwork, so let's stick to that. For me, more than 4 hours of work in one day is quite overwhelming. Here's what I do when it gets really stressful...

I reward myself by eating my favorite ice cream. That's banana cream flavour to be specific. What does it do? well, it takes my mind away from the stress.

It makes me look at the 4 hour work from a different angle. Instead of "I'm never doing that much work again", I think of it as "I did all that! Wow! I never knew I could achieve so much".

You see, a reward changes the way you think about work. And to make sure I don't overdo it, I never reward myself if I have done less than 4 hours of work that day.

This way, I would look forward (I know, it's creepy) to doing more work so I can get my reward!

A Valuable Lesson Learned
